The Southgate PE Department

Who are we?

We aim to offer students experiences which will enable them to enjoy different forms of activity through performing, planning, evaluating and working with others. Students should understand the importance of an active lifestyle in the maintenance of good health and be equipped to pursue sport in their leisure time.

How are we structured?

At Southgate School, all pupils at key stage 3 receive two lessons per week, with key stage 4 students timetabled with 3 lessons a fortnight. The lessons include a range of activities including gymnastics, dance, trampolining, athletics and a variety of invasion, net, and fielding/striking games. Those students who opt to study GCSE P.E have a further five lessons a fortnight, with three designated practical lessons and two theory lessons.

Key Stage 3 Curriculum

Year 7 groups are taught in colour groups which ultimately produces mixed ability classes of about 24. Subsequent year groups are taught in ability groups. In both boys and girls lessons there is a top group and two parallel middle groups. The lessons include gymnastics, dance, trampolining, athletics and a variety of invasion, net, and fielding / striking games.

So, what happens next?

Key Stage 4

Key stage 4 core PE lessons include a variety of net, striking and fielding games, trampolining, athletics and health and fitness. The invasion activities covered in these lessons are badminton, volleyball, basketball, hockey, lacrosse and football/netball.

In Year 11 will work towards Governing Body Award Schemes for their activities in order that their achievement may be recognised and included in their Record of Achievement.

GCSE P.E is a popular choice at key stage 4 and involves both practical and theory lessons. The GCSE exam board is Edexcel. Assessment is 60% practical and 40% theory. Further information can be found on our departmental pages.

Key Stage 5

Pupils can continue to study AQA Physical Education in years 12 and 13. Both the AS and A2 Level are delivered in TEN lessons per fortnight. There are no practical lessons as such due to the diverse nature of the students’ chosen activities. However, wherever possible, theory ideas are re-inforced in a practical environment.

Summary

Here at Southgate we offer a wide range of extra-curricular activities including an annual ski trip. These can be of a purely recreational nature, involve in-school competition or provide opportunity for inter school matches. Ultimately, we aim to inspire pupils to dedicate time to physical activity and appreciate the need to live a healthy active lifestyle.
